As in TASC, this can be accomplished by entering bulk property data for the stream or by specifying the composition of the stream and selecting a thermodynamic method to be used for calculating mixture properties. In addition to geometry and process data, physical properties of the hot and cold fluids must be supplied. Text boxes for required input items are outlined in red until a suitable value is entered. However, many of the input parameters either have a default value or can be calculated by the program. Exchanger geometry can be specified in great detail using individual forms for the shell, tubes, baffles, nozzles, etc. They can also be entered on the more detailed individual forms by expanding the tree at the left of the screen. Key geometrical parameters and process conditions can be entered and/or modified on the Input Summary form. There are seven major categories of input data for Xist as shown in the tree at the left of Figure 7.2.

The range over which each parameter is allowed to vary is user specified. Parameters that can be automatically varied are: In design mode, Xist finds the smallest exchanger that meets a given performance specification and pressure drop constraints. Thermal and hydraulic calculations are performed for each subdivision using local values of temperatures, pressures and physical properties, and the individual results are integrated to obtain overall results that are displayed in the output report files. The program uses enough rows and sections so that each three-dimensional subdivision of the exchanger involves only one type of flow (window flow or cross flow) and one tube pass.

Next, the exchanger is divided into rows (top to bottom) and sections (side to side). For non-baffled exchangers, 20 increments are used, with the exception of X-shells (10 increments) and K-shells (5 increments). For baffled exchangers, one increment is used for each baffle space unless a larger number is specified by the user. The heat exchanger is first divided into increments along the tube length. Xist is a fully incremental program, utilizing three-dimensional incrementation for all TEMA shell types. Thus, tube layouts and vibration analyses are still available, even though Xtlo and Xvib cannot be used as stand-alone programs in the educational version. However, Xtlo is a part of Xist in addition to being a separate program, and Xist also performs tube vibration analyses at strategic points in the tube bundle. This version includes only three of the eight modules, Xace, Xist and Xphe. Handling exchangers with multiple shells of different sizes is also greatly facilitated by utilizing the interface with a flowsheet simulator.Īn educational version of Xchanger Suite is available to universities for a nominal fee.

It also interfaces with flowsheet simulator software such as Aspen Plus, HYSYS, PRO II and HEXTRAN, so that the extensive physical property data banks, property estimation methods, and thermodynamic routines available in these simulators can be utilized as well. Hence, Xchanger Suite can be used on a stand-alone basis. The software contains pure-component physical property data for a large number of compounds, and includes a third-party thermodynamics package (VMG Thermo). The other two modules develop detailed tube layouts (Xtlo) and perform flow-induced tube vibration analyses (Xvib) for shell-and-tube exchangers. The package consists of eight major components, six of which perform design and rating calculations for the following types of heat-transfer equipment: air-cooled heat exchangers and economizers (Xace), fired heaters (Xfh), hairpin heat exchangers (Xhpe), shell-and-tube heat exchangers (Xist), jacketed-pipe heat exchangers (Xjpe), and plate-and-frame heat exchangers (Xphe). Serth, in Process Heat Transfer, 2007 7.8.1 HTRIĪs previously noted, the HTRI software package, Xchanger Suite, is available only to member companies, which include most major chemical, petroleum and engineering firms.
